Frequently asked questions

Questions we hear a lot from businesses and participants about how TradesBridge works.

For businesses

What is TradesBridge?+

We're a nonprofit bridge between young people curious about the trades and local trade businesses. We handle the matching, the paperwork, and the insurance. You handle showing someone what your trade actually looks like.

What does it cost me?+

Nothing. We're funded by workforce-development grants, trade associations, and community partners. No fees, no commission, no charge for hosting a shadow day or hiring someone you meet through us.

Am I obligated to hire anyone?+

No. Hosting a shadow day is a one-time visit with zero commitment. If someone's a good fit and you want to bring them on later, great. If not, no hard feelings and no paperwork either way.

Who's insured during a shadow day?+

We carry general liability and participant accident insurance covering the participant during their shadow day. Your business carries its own general liability and workers' comp, same as any normal business day.

What if the participant doesn't show up?+

Let us know through your dashboard. It happens occasionally. We follow up with the participant and it won't count against you or affect your capacity for future requests.

Can I stop hosting whenever I want?+

Yes. Flip the "Accept new shadow requests" toggle off in your profile any time and new requests stop coming. Anything already scheduled isn't affected. Turn it back on whenever you're ready.

For participants

What is a shadow day, really?+

A day watching someone do their actual job. You ride along, ask questions, see the tools and the truck and the paperwork. You don't run equipment or do the work yourself. It's a chance to see if a trade fits before you commit to anything.

Do I have to pay anything?+

No. TradesBridge is free for participants, always. No membership fee, no application fee, nothing.

What if I'm under 18?+

Most of our program is for adults 18 and up, including high school seniors. A limited number of shadowing spots are open to high school seniors under 18, with parental consent and safety arrangements we handle for you.

How do I get matched with a business?+

You pick the trade you're interested in and tell us your city and availability. We show your interest to businesses near you that work in that trade. When one accepts, they propose a few dates and you pick the one that works.

What happens after a shadow day?+

You rate your experience (the business doesn't see it, only we do) and decide if you want to keep exploring. If it felt right, you can apply for an apprenticeship at that same business. If it didn't, try a different trade or a different shop, no penalty either way.

Can I do this if I'm not sure I want a trade career yet?+

That's exactly what shadow days are for. You don't need to have decided anything. Come see what welding or HVAC or electrical work actually looks like day to day, then decide.
